If you supply equipment to indoor sports venues, you’ve probably been asked about tug of war matting at some point. Maybe a gym client wants to host a local competition. Maybe a school needs something safer than bare floor.
The search usually starts with “rubber matting for tug of war.” That’s a reasonable phrase. But it doesn’t tell you much about what separates a mat that lasts three seasons from one that gets rejected by competitors after the first event.
Here’s what actually matters.
The TWIF Standard Is a Starting Point, Not the Whole Story
TWIF recommends Dunlomat for indoor competition use. The spec is clear: 10mm thick, 1000mm wide, 36 meters long, over 325kg . The top surface uses a “Rufftop” grip rubber, and the underside is designed for gluing to a wooden base.
That’s useful information. But TWIF’s own documentation points out a problem the spec sheet doesn’t solve. Most rubber matting on the market is general-purpose material. At one European championship, three out of five mats were rejected by competitors as too slippery. The event continued with only the two genuine mats available .
For a venue supplier, that scenario is a warning. If the mat you supply fails on competition day, it’s your name the organizer remembers.
The Rubber Compound Matters More Than the Dimensions
Ask a simple question: what is the rubber made to withstand?
Annilte has spent 17 years making industrial conveyor belt rubber. That material is engineered for abrasion, tearing, and UV exposure—conditions far more punishing than a gym floor. When we applied that approach to competition matting, the result was a mat tested to handle 5,000+ pulls without losing structural integrity. The surface holds a friction coefficient of ≥ 0.85 in dry conditions. Tear strength comes in at over 150 kN/m (ISO 505), which matters when a single pull can exceed 4,000 Newtons .
What does that mean in practice? Fewer mid-season replacements. Fewer complaints from venue managers. A product that doesn’t become a problem after the first month.
Don’t Order the Mat Without the Base
This is a mistake we see often. Buyers focus on the mat, then figure out the base later.
TWIF competition mats are typically bonded to a plywood platform—18mm thick, cut slightly wider than the mat for secure fixing . If the mat and base aren’t matched properly, you get adhesion problems, edge lifting, and safety issues that show up during competition.
Annilte supplies mat and wooden base together as a complete system. The mat underside is made for bonding to the platform, and the platform is cut to match. One order, one supplier, one thing to check on delivery.
Lead Time Is Part of the Product
European buyers often wait months for matting from the Netherlands. If you’re supplying venues with fixed event dates, that wait becomes your problem.
Annilte runs 16 automated production lines and keeps over 400,000 square meters of raw material in stock. Emergency orders ship within 24 hours. Standard bulk orders go out in 7–15 days .
For event-driven procurement, that turnaround is worth something. It means you can say yes to a client who needs a mat in three weeks instead of three months.
Custom Sizes Beyond the Championship Spec
Not every venue needs a full 36-meter competition setup. Annilte offers:
- Any length or width
- Thickness from 4mm to 10mm depending on competition level
- Surface texture and hardness (Shore A 65–75) to balance grip and cushioning
For suppliers serving both competitive clubs and school programs, this means one supplier covers multiple product tiers. No need to juggle three vendors for three different mat types.
A Quick Note on Certifications
European procurement teams usually need documentation. Annilte holds ISO 9001 and RoHS compliance and is an SGS Gold Supplier . That said, always ask for current certificates for your specific market—from us or anyone else. Paperwork that’s out of date is worse than no paperwork.
So What Should You Actually Compare?
Forget the basic dimensions for a moment. Compare these instead:
- How long the rubber holds its grip under repeated use
- Tear strength (ISO 505) as a predictor of failure under peak load
- Whether the base platform is included and matched
- Lead time reliability for event deadlines
- How much customization the supplier can actually deliver without adding weeks
Annilte isn’t trying to be a Dutch brand clone. We’re a factory that makes industrial rubber, and we’ve applied that to competition matting. If you need a reliable source with fast turnaround and flexible order sizes, it’s worth a conversation.
