1. What Makes Rotary Heat Press Felt Different
If you run a rotary heat transfer calender, you already know the blanket is not a generic pad. It wraps around a heated drum, passes through a nip under sustained pressure, and cycles through heating and cooling thousands of times per production run.
Rotary heat press felt must do three jobs at once:
- Conduct heat evenly from the drum to the transfer paper and fabric
- Equalize pressure across the full drum face width
- Hold dimensional stability so the blanket tracks true and the print register stays sharp
A flatbed press pad can tolerate compromises in these areas. A rotary calender cannot. This is why the specification and construction of rotary heat press felt deserve more scrutiny than a catalog price list provides.
2. The Specification Checklist
2.1 Density (g/m²)
Density determines how the felt behaves under sustained nip pressure.
- 2,200–2,800 g/m² — softer hand, suits lower-pressure lines and textured fabrics
- 2,800–3,600 g/m² — the working range for most rotary calender machines
- 3,600–4,400 g/m² — high-pressure lines, resists compression set longer
A blanket that is too soft for your line speed will compact prematurely and develop thin bands at the roller positions. One that is too hard will not conform to fabric irregularities, leaving pressure marks.
Action: Ask your supplier which density they recommend for your machine model and line speed—not just what they stock.
2.2 Thickness
Most rotary heat transfer blankets run 6–10 mm, with 8 mm the most common field specification. Thicker blankets (10–12 mm) offer more compression recovery for high-pressure applications but absorb more heat energy during warm-up.
Action: Match thickness to your nip geometry. If you are replacing an existing blanket, measure the old one under light tension rather than flat on a bench.
2.3 Working Temperature
100% Nomex felt performs continuously at 200–260°C, with short-term peaks to 280°C.
Be careful with suppliers who quote 280°C as a continuous rating. That is a peak temperature. Sustained operation above 260°C accelerates fiber degradation and shortens blanket life.
Action: Confirm your actual drum surface temperature at the nip, not just the setpoint on the control panel.
2.4 Endless Construction
Rotary heat press felt should be endless (seamless). A joined belt introduces a thick point that causes tracking drift, pressure marks, and eventual joint failure.
Action: Confirm the blanket is truly endless, not a joined belt with a skived splice.
2.5 Width and Perimeter
Annilte manufactures endless rotary heat press felts in widths from 600 mm to 3,800 mm and perimeters from 1,200 mm to 8,000 mm, with OEM customization.
Action: Specify the usable fabric width you need to print, not the drum face width. Allow for edge trim.
3. Failure Modes: What to Watch For
A rotary heat press felt does not fail without warning. Watch for these signals.
Thermal Shrinkage
The blanket tightens on the rollers, tracking drifts, and print registration moves. Quality felt holds shrinkage below 1% through its service life.
Surface Glazing
Sublimation dye residue and thermal byproducts build a glazed layer that reduces heat transfer and can mark fabric. Ask about cleaning protocols and surface restoration.
Edge Fraying
On wide blankets, edges take the highest mechanical and thermal stress. Poorly needled edges shed fiber, contaminate fabric, and lead to tracking failure. Look for edge densification in the manufacturing process.
Permanent Compression Set
Visible thin bands or depressions at roller positions mean the felt has lost resilience. It cannot be restored—plan replacement before print quality drops.
4. Supplier Evaluation Questions
Most rotary heat press felt listings on B2B marketplaces come from trading companies repackaging the same mill output. These questions separate manufacturers from resellers.
“What is the fiber source and needling process?”
100% virgin Nomex fiber is the baseline. Needling density and pattern determine surface smoothness and compression recovery. A supplier who cannot describe their needling process is likely not the manufacturer.
“Can you provide batch-level shrinkage test data?”
Below 1% is the standard claim. A responsible manufacturer provides the test method and batch data, not just a catalog number.
“Have you supplied blankets for my machine brand?”
Rotary heat transfer machines from Klieverik, Monti, Transmatic, Lemaire, Practix, and Stork each have specific dimensions, tensioning systems, and nip profiles. Prior experience with your machine type means correct dimensions on the first order.
“What service life should I expect under my conditions?”
A catalog “one year” rating means nothing. Ask for references from customers running similar line speeds, temperatures, and fabric types.
