Picking the Right Mesh Size for Fruit Processing (And Why Most Plants Get It Wrong)

Picking the Right Mesh Size for Fruit Processing

Here's something nobody tells you when you're specifying a polyester mesh belt for fruit: the mesh opening matters more than the belt material itself.

Most suppliers will sell you "food grade polyester mesh" and call it a day. But a blueberry line and a melon-slice line need completely different openings. Get it wrong and you'll either watch product fall through the belt, or wonder why your dryer is burning gas for no reason.

The Two Failure Modes

Too large an opening — small fruit drops through. Obvious.

Too small an opening — you lose the whole point of using mesh. Air and water can't move through the belt efficiently. Your dryer works harder, your wash line pools water, and nobody connects the problem back to the belt.

There's a middle ground, but it shifts depending on what's on the belt.

A Rough Starting Point

Fruit Type Typical Mesh Opening Why
Berries, sliced stone fruit 1–2 mm Supports small pieces without marking
Fresh-cut chunks 2–3 mm Good balance of drainage and support
Leafy items, larger chunks 3–5 mm Better airflow and drainage

For washing, you want water to leave the belt fast. For drying, you want hot air to pass through the product bed from below, not just skim the top. Those are different requirements. Sometimes a plant runs both processes on the same line — that's when mesh selection becomes a compromise, or a reason to run two belts.

What Matters More Than the Number

The published mesh opening (say, 2000 µm) is a nominal figure. What you should actually ask about is open area percentage.

A belt with a 2 mm opening might have 45% open area, or it might have significantly less depending on the weave. Open area is what determines airflow and drainage performance. It's the number that affects your energy bill.

Edge quality is the other one. Fruit lines run wet, and belt edges take a beating against the frame. If the edge isn't properly sealed, fibers start shedding. You won't notice until someone finds a strand in a punnet. Annilte seals belt edges with a high-frequency process that encapsulates the fibers, so the edge doesn't fray and you don't get loose strands. Not glamorous, but it's the feature that keeps QA off your back.

One Question Worth Asking

Before you order, ask your supplier for a short sample length and run it on your actual line for a shift.

  • Watch how the fruit sits.
  • Watch how water drains.
  • Watch the edge where it contacts the frame.

A sample tells you more than any spec sheet. Any manufacturer confident in their product should be willing to send one.

Need a Recommendation?

Send us three things:

  1. Fruit type and typical piece size
  2. Whether you're washing, drying, or both
  3. Your line width and speed

We'll recommend a mesh specification based on what we've seen work across fruit processing lines — not just a catalog number.
